Childhood-Story:
From age 3 - at bedtime - I tell Monet stories from my childhood.
I ask her what age she wants me to be in the story - then I remember.
"5". .1943, .OK. .
Mom has the measles. She has red spots all over her body.
The Doctor comes; she must stay in the dark, be taken care of, and
she will be fine.
I bring Edie grapefruit for 3 days.

I hear:
I like it when it's clean over here too.
Childhood-Story:
Best-Sleep-Walking .1950
Our rooms are separated from the house and separated by a bathroom.
Frankie wakes me up, "What are you doing ?!"
I'm standing in his closet peeing into his shoes.
I hear:
Well, your psychiatrist called and asked questions.
Well, she wants to know if you're still hearing voices.
I told ...

Childhood-Story:
1944, I'm 7 - It could be A. Phillip Randolf himself !
Mom takes Frankie and me on the train from LA to Boston.
Black men help us.
Sleeping car sleeping ! White table cloth dining, silverware, water.
Men in military uniform drinking and smoking in special cars - I roam and spy.
He gives me a stick of real Wrigley's Spearmint Gum. I know the War.
Then to Kennebunkport, Maine, to stay at the Dane 'beach house'.
The Atlantic Ocean is chopping-splashing. It will let us swim, "Watch it !"
I am more than free to climb the rocks, find friends, fish , eat hot dogs.
It goes hours without seeing a relative. We smoke coffee in straws.
Pinball machines are big-color-fantasy. We row boats, crawl the sand.
A bandaid does for my palm what 15 stitches should. It still looks nasty-good !

Childhood-Story:
Bad Dreams
From '1941 - '1965 they are usually about war battles and escape.
During the Korean War I actually start jumping out windows - asleep.
This is not good in hotels - in the army - I stack chairs against windows.
That stops around '65 when teaching dreams take over !
I'm always struggling to maintain order.
Don't have the slightest idea what I'm supposed to teach.
Nothing works.
I still have them - Even with Subbing - Anxious every time - Too bad, BillyBoy.
And then there's cuckoldings and my children in danger.

2007 .A BEGINNING
The Website concept arrived when Monet and Nick
told me the Internet would get my pictures out there.
And I realized, would take me another step beyond
critic - gallery - museum - publisher decisions.

A process I'd started with the photo-postcard mailing in 1969.Yes ! All of the pictures I want you to see will be on the Website,
from 1964 to the present. (I have to 'never-mind' all the 'lost' pictures)Nick Jarvis Powers does computer-form-content-humor-music-spirit
while I sit second chair wondering how he does it, over 'n over again.
We hope you will share the experience.

...Dear Monet and Nick,
...You sure started something !
...Thank you so much.
...Love, BillDad

Thank You Rabbi Beerman and All.

I hear:How could you be so greedy as to think
that someone will love you the way ...
Ben Lifson sent me the following after he received my Website invite.
Luckily he said I could quote him:
Dear Bill
Thank you very much indeed for having sent me this link to your work.
I've had time this morning to look only at the most recent Volume 9.
This is not only excellent work but also among the most important current photography I've seen ...
I can think of nothing better and very little even in the same league...
I can't think of anything this strong, wide-ranging (what a net you're casting over our culture!), surprising (no sensibility more open)...
Of subject matter so various...
Of style so flexible...
Of literacy (w/ respect to photography, painting and popular imagery) so vast and deep...
Of variations on motifs and themes so strenuous and searching...
Of compositions so original but w/ roots so obviously in the great past...
And so on.
Yours is history at its best, committed, passionate, & the kind of making that makes Gibbon and Clarendon also monuments of English imaginative prose. (See Clarendon's famous account of the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham.)
Documentary? Yes, of course. But in the sense of Ezra Pound's statement, when he called poetry (or, perhaps, literature generally) "News that stays news."
It deserves to be universally known.
What plans for exhibitions (here, abroad), books? Keep me posted.
Thank you again. This is strong, significant work and a good jolt on a Sunday morning.
"Once out of nature I shall never take
My bodily form from any natural thing,
But such a form as Grecian goldsmiths make
Of hammered gold and gold enamaling
To keep a drowsy emperor awake..."

Good to hear from you.
yrs,
Ben

Editing
Me and the Image and You

From Russell Banks' Introduction to his "The Angel on the Roof".
One of the most difficult things to say to another person is, I hope that you will love me for no good reason. But it is what we all want and rarely dare to say to one another - to our children, to our parents and mates, to our friends, and to strangers. Especially to strangers, who have neither good nor bad reasons to love us. And it's why we tell each other stories that we pray will be transformed in the telling by that angel on the roof, made believable and about us all, no matter who we are to one another and who we are not.
I Street Walk to find pictures = Hunt and Release.
I believe I'd be called a "Straight Still Photographer".
(Perhaps, "Bi ....." or "Still Straight .....")
Using a digital Nikon D80 since '07,
I edit, crop and tweak with 'iPhoto8'.
(Moses told me he could get me Photoshop free -
I thanked him and no thanked him)
Pictures then go to Pictopia for "normalizing",
Volume creation, but apparently not
to print for Shows & Sales !
Buy, .Bill ..Sorry!. Bye, .Bill

PHOTO POSTCARDS
Since 1969
I've mailed my pictures as postcards
to ensure an audience beyond
the decisions of others.
Now, we have the Internet and the Website.
Theoretically, this makes my pictures really
accessible to folks everywhere and forever.
I figure the number of photo postcards mailed
must be close to +- 69,000. ... (recycled?!).
I've usually mailed +- 3 of any one image.
There are 1,000 + pictures here at
BILL DANE PHOTOGRAPHS OUTSIDE INSIDE
There are 1000s of other 'lost-to-me' pictures
'edited-out' over the years - gone - no negatives.
The '07-'08 MoMA Show included several.
It's strange fun this way.
Wish I had 'em back ? - some days - but -
they'll show up here n there - perhaps.
Editing is way harder than I think it is.

And this is only the ending:
The Tell-Tale-Son:

All of a sudden Edie
decided to leave Sierra Madre.
Within three months She, Nancy, Frank and I had
found Willow Glen Villa in San Jose, sold the house,
packed her up, and physically moved everything.
It took two extra trips in my wagon to bring all her plants.
We photographed Mom's living room, (etc) so we could
carefully reconstruct her 7' x 12' display shelves -
a collection of objects: travels, gifts, oddities -
in her new, one bedroom apartment. Frank rebuilt it again
in her 'assisted living' apartment.
Then again when we moved Mom to Nancy's.
Her favorite "stuff" went with her, as it had since childhood.
'Hospice Week' at Nancy's house Mom lived in her room
surrounded with 'furnishings' which had been within
feet of her self, as far back as we could remember.
Edie died very quietly right there with.

It was just getting dark June 23rd 2002

Mar 12, 2010

Edie's Last Days:
I take Mom to Kaiser for "Evaluation".
She moves around - reality wise - not too far out.
Her Doctor, sweet voice for seniors I gather,
"Hello Mrs. Dane. Can you tell me who you are ?"
Edie, in her most cultured tone with tightened jaw,
"You know perfectly well who I am, and so do I."

Mar 11, 2010

Edie's Last Days:
Mom has a double room at Kaiser.
Curtain, and older couple's voices, next bed over.
They've been arguing about the wife going home, etc !
Edie is in and out - stream of consciousness mumblings.
(It was always entertaining and cried out for 'sense making')
She suddenly sits shot up straight, and in loud and no uncertain terms,
"For God's sake take her home.
Can't you see she wants to go home"

Mar 10, 2010

Edie's Last Days:
Mom has been at Kaiser for 10 days.
Today is "Decision Day". Edie has to move on.
Her Doctors must recommend her next placement.
They've tried Meds and Talk and Scans = fuzzy picture !
Her Doctors want Kaiser to pay for her to go to Rehab.
She
must pass a "Mobility Exam" - Mind and Body !
In comes the 'brand new', really young, testing "Therapist".
Sweetest high voice, for elders I gather,
"Good morning Edie.
Now, You have to do what I ask so you'll get that wonderful new
placement. Let's sit up. Up we go, Edie. Now let's just swing
your legs over the edge of the bed. Here we go. Try to do it all
by yourself, Edie". At this point Mom grasps her arm tight.
In a perfectly articulated, tight jawed, patrician tone,
"You may try to get me to do anything you want, Dear.
It will not work. I died at ten o'clock this morning".

the fact that my half sister Sarah is murdered.

The Sickened:
We think and feel about it more and less.
U.S.A. Citizens' Health Care Is SiCKO!

Obama - Doctor Fresh Air - a chance to get better ?!
BUT! Our consciousness, will, power. to move beyond
corporate fascism to Single Payer and Civilization ?! Sad !
Lucky! Our family has a real costly health plan for: babies, hernias,
new hip, colonoscopies, hamartoma, melanoma and on it will go.
We think and feel more and less - about class and money
and luck and entitlement - about empathy.
There are people working to change this.

There are also people who say they are not naive.
They tell us this is how it is and was everywhere and forever.
Looking at my images after photo hunting and gathering I know
stuff is always close by; health - housing - sex - war - greed -
injustice and on it goes .....
Good luck to all of us, Bill

Childhood-Story:
1949-50 two, six week summers at Silver Pines Camp, 30 miles east of Redding
First summer I don't pay much attention to the Silver Belt Buckle competition.
We collect points for every kind of 'sporting' event over the summer.
We fish, swim, shoot, horse, clean, and big-points! = find an Indian Arrowhead.
Second summer,
I know I can win it if I find an arrowhead in the final days - our totals are posted.
There's a small small lake half a mile over the hill. I get permission to hike over.
Lost Lake is 100 yards long rock-stone shore the length - other side, banks.
I .hands-n-knees. back-n-forth . for three hot-dry hours.
This feeling of "I'm-gonna-find-it" has been with me since '38. I know it well.
Just have to keep on Truckin'.
Hour number four I find my no-doubt Indian Arrowhead.
Two and a half inches, brown-gray, shallow-notched-sculpted to it's point.
Two times I lie face down and cry out loud at my camp:
..Alone in the woods, stick-leader-fly-cool-mossy-creekside. my first fish.
..Alone in the rocks and stones with the Arrowhead.

It occurs to me that you all may have small knowledge of my relationship with my brother since '40.
In the presence of his health situation, and given our familial relationships, this may interest you.
There was some sibling stuff, we fought a bit.
I knew he was more likable.  The parents knew it - ok.
As kids we rarely played together - didn't share friends or interests.  Not much in common.
I played mostly with older kids.  We didn't hang out at schools.  He went to a different jr hi.
Went to summer day camps alone - went 6 weeks to Silver Pines at 11 and 12 years old.
Went away to Midland for 10th and 11th grades - went into the army after 1 yr at PCC.
I always had jobs - spent small time at home.
Went to Berkeley and Cal in '61.  We had USPS and phones - no social media.
We didn't appear to care much what each other did over all the years.  I believe we didn't.
One doesn't know what effects 'changes' will present.
When the father died it meant nothing - dead to me since '38.
When mom went down it was natural to help my sister deal in my small ways - only 7 weeks.
Mom was also very entertaining as she went.  It was a quiet emotional experience for me.
My life with mom had used up the sub & noisy stuff over the years.
We were never hugs-close.  Cerebral sharing we did ok.
Now, I don't well understand his diagnosis and prognosis. I do have the general picture.
He trusts you - his daughter and son - to navigate for him.
I assume he is way more upset and fearful than he presents.
If I can get thru timing and phone issues I call him once a week.
Talking to him is what you know it to be.
I have always hoped the best for him.
I am not you.  Sincerely Bill.   04/01/14

Childhood-Story:
1943 WWII Time
I go to neighborhood mail boxes and collect for two weeks.
People start asking around about missing mail.
In my secret hideout I have letters from sons in the War.
I tell them, "I think I found your letters".
It takes me 'til 1945 to say, "Sorry" to the soldier next door.
I hear:
... that's the problem ... tooth pulled ... drank last night ...
had a couple beers this morning ... I'm not! ...
I photograph the way I always have
