Bill Dane: The Photographic Postcard As a Conceptual Art Work

William Williams - Haverford College - Pennsylvania

Thomas Garver Haverford College class of 1956 was contacted last June to solicit ideas as to how to structure an exhibition to acknowledge his support of the photography collection at Haverford over two decades. He replied that his gift should be thought of as an “Accidental Collection” because that is what it is. The hundreds of prints and related material that he has given signify that it is more than that. O. Winston Link, Charles Currier, vernacular photography and Bill Dane’s real photographic post card correspondence stand out because of their sheer numbers and affinity with each other. Graver wrote of Dane’s postcard photographs:

One might imagine Dane as one photographer among many in a crowd, waiting for the momentary appearance of a "great personality," The figure appears--all cameras fire in unison--except Dane's, His reflexes appear to be curiously skewed. While all the other Photographers get the standard "shot," Dane gets the special, perhaps awkward, but very personal photograph, the photograph that turns our "personality" bock into a person.

Dane’s Photographic post card correspondence to Garver is a succinct summing up of this esthetic and the state of photography in the middle of the 20th century. The twenty-four post cards on exhibition are at once a meditation on the meaning of photographs, the technology of image transmission and a record of a correspondence between friends. The cards are displayed so that both sides can be seen. This allows the image and text to be experienced as Dane made them. Tom’s description of his gift as “Accidents” is instructive and a rewarding way to look at and to appreciate the originality of Bill Dane’s work.

Nick, Major Powers, and I have been evolving the site since '07.
We we we have rollicking fun and do some self-serious shit.
I had +- 1500 pictures in older versions of the site.
Overwhelming and Underedited !
The 3 eras have logics.
The eras are functional divisions - for viewers.
I edited for 2 months 'weeding' my garden = very satisfying.
We found the logical breaks and put +-100 pictures in each.
We created 'Right Now' = Flickr - for recent pictures.
These are rough edited pictures - not digested over time - yet !
? Do I prefer an era (no) or pictures = I selected each picture from thousands since '69.
Jan-Feb - 2 months of re-editing = I prefer them all.
But !  I don't look back (except to website).
So !  Could say I prefer the pictures in reverse chronological order.
What I'm up to Right Now is all it's about.

Damn  I wish I read stuff.

Heh. Thanks for the explanation. This email is priceless, a lovely dialogue poem. I figured your email was good-intentioned but after getting (random, undeserved) attacks on here lately, I sometimes look askance at things and think they're attacks when they'r not. I had no idea who "lil billy" was. Two Bills confuse a brew or stew?

It's strange. When I used to "live wrong" (or wronger, who knows what is "right," really) I would get upset if I thought someone was "badgering" me. But now it's more a blip in my day and I float on.

Your work is challenging to people, Bill, and that's the great thing. I can honestly say you to I think your stuff is truly great and you didn't fall into any of the "time traps" that so many of the people who came up alongside you seemed to have done with various genres and such.

Your work is all-out deliciously weird and divinely inspired and you crash through all that genre nonsense to get at the essential poetry and talkativeness of the image (which is, of course, a plurality of images that never stop).

I don't know about website traffic and all that but the longer you keep at it (your website is relatively new) the more you will attract people. Probably if you bragged more, you'd go up even quicker, but somehow it doesn't seem to be your personality. Tant pis. ;p

I saw you posted some good-hearted politically motivated stuff on there but it seems like we're in this post-dialogue state in America. Probably the haves love apathy on the part of the have nots.

I'm at the age where I'm realizing that not just the social world but existence itself is fundamentally insane, so I try to worry less. I don't know if that's apathy. I don't try to feel less but I do try to worry less. Maybe that's a contradiction in terms and I'm doomed for that strategy.

We just found out our water was disgusting through much of 2013 and our township never told us. Who knows how many people died of giardiasis in that period because they chose not to tell us. I just got a brochure for a town meeting about it. I hope someone passed it on to the ambulance chasers. One good way for the poor to get rich around here is for some entity with money to poison one of their own. The Mill did it for about a century. Now apparently it's the water company. I'd just like to get a reduced rate. I mean for the poisoning.
